Unlike Truman, the American Prez famous for ‘The Buck Stops Here’, Obama has lost my respect for dodging/avoiding/whimping out of a tough question:
Asked at what point a baby gets “human rights,” Obama, who strongly supports abortion rights, said: “… whether you’re looking at it from a theological perspective or a scientific perspective, answering that question with specificity … is above my pay grade.” (Reuters)
Abortion is a sensitive, difficult, divisive issue. I heard from a woman that works at a crisis pregnancy center, “Before abortion is illegal, we need to make it unthinkable”. That’s kind of the stand I like to take. There are so many issues surrounding abortion (abuse, neglect, poverty, mis-education among others) that need to be dealt with before the doctor’s office.
What bugs me about Obama’s response, is that he’s unwilling to answer a tough question. If the leader of a country isn’t at the ‘pay grade’ to deal with something like this, he doesn’t sound like he’s suitable for the job. Be hot, be cold on an issue, but if you’re lukewarm = spew.
