The Dragon is rising.
China is a country of contradictions. Wealth/poverty, freedom/bondage, health/disability.
Not only is China the fastest growing economy in the world right now, it’s the fastest growing economy in the world ever. She is also growing immensely in technological and militaristic power. For the first time since the ’80’s, a country is posed to challenge the USA for the title of world superpower.
China is not without its major problems. They have 20% of the earth’s population, and they need to feed them with 7% of the world’s arable land. This land is shrinking all the time. The pollutants and toxins in China are higher than in most other places on earth. High population density will do that. Recent exports have been defective, poisoned and of poor quality. The government is communist (although it has allowed immense changes to spur the economy). The population is growing restless under poor working conditions and government corruption.
Russia is gaining in moxy, and China is certainly gaining in strength. Let’s hope the two never become too friendly.
The CBC was involved in an unique documentary exploring some of these ideas. Previews of it can be seen here.
