I lived through some of the Cold War years, but I was really too young to appreciate how stressful those years were for folks in North America. When the Soviet Union dissolved in 1992, I was in grade 10. I was more interested in volleyball, girls and the french fries in the school cafeteria.
Well now Putin is starting to exercise his soveriegn muscle, and I think things are getting a little bit tense. In just the last couple of months, Russia has been holding joint military excercises with China, has claimed the North Pole and all its resources, and now is proclaiming it will become one of the world’s leading jet-makers. (Remember those old MiG fighters from Top Gun? Well they’re a formidable weapon. They’ve sold them to countries like Iran, China and India, and their new model is pretty effective)
I understand countries want to ‘keep up’ – militarily or technologically. I think that’s OK. I also think it’s healthy to have a balance of power in the world. Well we’re really starting to see that happening with the rise of China, the strength of the EU, and now the flexing of Russia.
It’s just that a crazy nutbar in charge of a country like that – and yikes! Putin doesn’t seem to care what others think either. From the debacle of the Russian spy being poisoned, to the claims of Russian sovereignty over International waters, Putin is doing some downright scary things. I for one, am starting to hold my breath.
